The two of them look at each other with genuine bewilderment and then look back at Hiccup with equal bewilderment. There is no "uh oh, we're caught!" reaction, nor do they have a canned platitude on hand.
They look completely confused over why anyone would want to hurt them.
"Why would anyone do such a thing?" says the woman. They've been told her name is Elsbeth.
"You're from another world," says Jonas, the male escort. "People are fascinated with your very existence. The gala is going to have quite a few in attendance, including many of our most learned natural philosophers. Half of the scholars from Oxford will likely be in attendance. I'm actually a student there myself, working on my thesis. I'm an experimental theologist." A pause. "Uh, I don't know if you have the same terms, but I study atomies and fundamental forces."
He powers on with the excitement of someone who is enjoying being neck dep in their thesis. "You have no idea what this is doing to further the study of atomcraft. We're thrilled to have a chance to ask for your observations of the natural forces of your worlds. Even from non-philosophers, it could tell us so much about the fundamental forces -"
"Jonas, you're going to bore the man to tears," Elsbeth finally interrupts.
"Sorry."
"The lad gets awfully excitable about his scholarship," says Elsbeth. "He is right though. Alongside the natural philosophers, there will also be quite a few members of the clergy -"
Jonas interrupts again, still clearly excited, "- The existence of other worlds means all kinds of amazing advancements in their study of practical philosophy -"
"- And due to certain personal politics and the fact the clergy and scholars aren't exactly known for throwing a soiree, there will be many lords and ladies in attendance as well, but at worst they'll treat you as the weekly source of interest. I'm sure they'll all have gossip to share about who the otherworlders showed the most favor to."
"- completely missing the point of course," interrupts Jonas saltily. "We all get one chance to talk to people from another universe before they all go home. I do hope the aristocracy doesn't try to monopolize their time for gossiping rights."
If they're here for a shady reason, at the very least it seems like these two probably aren't aware of it.
